The music is back! The producers of the Jersey City Jazz Festival are back with the highly anticipated return of PierFest, a Friday night Latin Jazz series at the J.Owen Grundy Pier at Exchange Place in Jersey City. Riverview Jazz and Exchange Place Alliance have once again partnered to produce this free-to-the-public weekly event featuring world-class music acts, dance instruction, and food trucks against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Each event will begin at 6pm and feature two bands.
“It feels so good to get some music happening again! It’s been a very long time coming, but we are so thrilled to present this fabulous collection of artists at one of the most beautiful locations in town,” says Riverview Jazz Executive Director Bryan Beninghove. “This area is just filled to the brim with great musicians, especially in the Latin Jazz genre. The opportunity to catch this music for free is just crazy - you can’t think of a better way to spend your summer Friday nights!”
PierFest begins Friday, August 6 with legendary trombonist Papo Vázquez Mighty Pirates Troubadours at 7:30, with Brazilian pianist and vocalist Abelita Mateus opening at 6pm. On August 13 The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet opens, followed by the heavily salsa-inspired Mitch Frohman & the Bronx Horns. For the last two dates Riverview Jazz has partnered with Circle 9 Music to present two evenings of artists from their talented roster. August 20 will feature Karen Joseph “Mambocha'' and legendary bongocera John “Dandy” Rodriguez’s Dream Team. Dandy was the musical director for Tito Puente for over 33 years. The series will close on August 27th with saxophonist Ivan Renta Latin Jazz Quintet and Grammy winner Doug Beavers “Sol”. (see full list below)
